Myth: Wind Turbines are a Threat to Birds!
When people express concern about bird mortality and think about how to save the birds of the sky, they often look to wind turbines. However, this concern is based on a delusional, fleeting imagination that has little to do with reality.
Fact: Windows kills the largest number of birds every year. Hundreds of thousands of birds are killed every day by hitting the windows of high-rise glass buildings, and millions of birds do not return from migration. Gediminas Petkus, a member of the Lithuanian Ornithological Society, has said, "Around 240,000 birds die every day after hitting glass in Europe alone."
Birds crash into power lines, collide with planes, trains and cars and are also affected by hunters and cats!
A study of eleven wind turbines at the Klima wind farm in North Jutland, Denmark, found that wind farms account for just 0.01 percent of bird deaths in the area.
When assessing the impact of planned wind farms on the environment, special attention is paid to monitoring bird migration in both summer and winter seasons. Additionally, at the end of last year, Lithuania implemented a new "Detailed description of the criteria for the significant impact of wind parks on birds and bats, the application of measures to prevent and reduce the significant negative impact on birds and bats, and the description of research requirements."
